Continuing Education and Competency Requirements
New Jersey PTs and PTAs must complete 30 continuing education (CE) credits every biennial renewal cycle (expiring January 31 of even-numbered years). This must include at least 4 credits in jurisprudence and professional ethics, featuring the 1.5-hour New Jersey Jurisprudence Assessment Module.
Core CEU & Competency Rules
- Total Credits: 30 hours required per biennial period.
- Ethics & Jurisprudence: Minimum of 4 credits must be in jurisprudence and professional ethics. This includes 2.5 hours in professional ethics and 1.5 hours dedicated to the NJ JAM (administered by FSBPT).
- Distance Learning Limit: A maximum of 10 credits (out of 30) may come from asynchronous home study or internet courses. The remaining 20 hours must be completed via live, synchronous coursework (e.g., in-person seminars or live interactive webinars).
- Provider Approval: Courses should be sponsored or approved by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), the American Physical Therapy Association of New Jersey (APTANJ), or directly authorized by the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.
New Licensee Pro-Rated Rules
If you are newly licensed, your first cycle requirements are adjusted based on when your license is issued: [1]
- Licensed in the 1st Year of the Cycle: Must complete 15 credits.
- Licensed in the 2nd Year of the Cycle: Exempt from CE requirements for that specific biennial period. [1, 2]
Alternative Competency Methods
Instead of traditional course hours, licensees may satisfy competency via alternative learning methods approved by the board, such as:
- Academic Coursework: 15 credits are awarded for each course credit earned in post-graduate DPT programs or related academic programs (provided it wasn't part of your initial licensure degree).
- Clinical Instruction: You can earn credits by supervising clinical students, verified by documentation from the student's university.
- Publishing/Editing: Writing a chapter or editing a textbook counts toward competency (retain a copy of the published text).
Audits & Record Keeping
- Retention: You are required to retain certificates of completion, conference documentation, or proof of clinical instruction for at least 4 years (covering two biennial periods).
- Audits: The NJSBPTE conducts random compliance audits to review non-pre-approved coursework and verify credit breakdowns.
