The announcement of Professor Barbara J. Behrens, PTA, MS as APTANJ’s first PTA of the Year award recipient should come as no surprise.  Afterall, she’s been a trailblazer in New Jersey and receiving this award during the 50th anniversary of the Physical Therapist Assistant is yet another accomplishment in her decorated forty year career as a PTA.  Barbara will be honored and receive her award at APTANJ’s Annual Awards Program sponsored by JAG-ONE Physical Therapy on Saturday evening, October 19 at the National Conference Center in East Windsor, NJ.

Professor Behrens is the founding program coordinator of the PTA program at Mercer County Community College and was recognized nationally as the first PTA recipient of the FA Davis Award for Outstanding Physical Therapist Assistant Educator.  She currently serves as a member of the NJ State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.  She received her appointment in 2003 by the NJ Governor and has the distinction of being the first PTA in state history to hold that position.  Professor Behrens has held the position of Vice Chairperson for the NJ State Board, is presently the chair of the Education Committee and a NJ representative on the Physical Therapy Compact Commission.

Professor Behrens started her career in physical therapy by earning her Associate in Applied Science Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Union County College, Cranford NJ. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Education from Rutgers University, New Brunswick NJ and her Master of Science degree in Adult Education from Capella University in Minneapolis, MN.

APTANJ is proud to present our first 2019 PTA of the Year Award to Barbara J. Behrens.
