Linking Breathing and Postural Control - Why the Core is Not What You Think

This lecture will suggest a change in perspective in the way in which practitioners view core stability and postural control. The speaker, a faculty member-in-training for Dr. Mary Massery will present evidence of the coordinated roles of the vocal folds, diaphragm and pelvic floor in both breathing mechanics and postural control, and using a multi-systems perspective, present several patient cases applying these concepts to clinical work. Interactive demonstrations will allow participants to gain real time understanding of the link between breathing mechanics and motor behaviors.

This presentation will be given live at Children's Specialized Hospital in Toms River and will be live streamed to 2 additional Children's Specialized Hospital locations in Mountainside and New Brunswick. 2 CEs

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the link between breathing and postural control in terms of pressure mechanics
  2. Describe the multiple simultaneous roles of the diaphragm
  3. Demonstrate the role of the vocal folds on postural responses and balance control and make a case for the use of speaking valves for patients with tracheostomies, in physical therapy
  4. Describe the coordination between the vocal folds, diaphragm and pelvic floor in breathing mechanics and postural control and discuss populations at risk for dysfunction  in each or all of these structures
